I think it is a spiritual comment - as in "at his side" or help mate. Then I don't take scripture literally as in the word of the law. That is a more Hebrew understanding. Jesus spoke in a depth difficult to comprehend in its full meaning. I go by the spirit of the law, as everything He did was in love, even the turning of the tables in the tempe. It was love of the father.
God created Eve for many reasons, not just reproduction. Isn't it interesting Jesus had Mary Magdalene at His side to understand Him in a way the 12 disciples never could.
I read this passage and I read God took Adam’s DNA and formed Eve. Just what would this process look like to us today? We are potentially describing something like genetic engineering.
I also think the commentary of Matthew Henry has some validity as well.
“God formed Eve from Adam’s rib — not from his head, lest she should rule over him;
nor from his feet, lest she should be trampled underfoot by him;
but from his side, so that she would be equal with him,
under his arm to be protected,
and near his heart to be beloved.”
I believe the passage supports both views simultaneously. The physical action is described with its technical details like perhaps anesthesia. And the emotional/relational/spiritual aspect of where God chose to take a “sample” (if that is what it was) and Adam’s reaction when presented with his wife.

Does anything in the Gen 2 text language suggest the rib or part was from the right? Proverbs certainly indicates a right-good, left-bad association.
If there was something in the physiology of male rib cages on the right side that corresponded to an unusual pattern that wasn’t explainable and didn’t seem to have a purpose, and roughly corresponded to where a spear tip would be thrust through from a ground position to directly strike the pleural effusion sack, that would be yet another amazing clue that God has left for us in plain sight.
The Elohim created mankind. YHWY did his own experiments. He put Adam, one of his creations in a garden/pasture as you would do to your prize bull. He then created a woman. He set up his creation by excluding them from the tree of life. He calls them dirt. He kicks them out of their home and makes them toil the earth.
Meanwhile, the Elohim had already created mankind as we can read in Gen 1 - how else was the earth populated? Who was Cain afraid of? Where did all the people come from if not the Elohim?
And then we should look at the fruits of YHWH.. how’s that working out?
