The first beast was a religio-political power (a government where church and state were unified), the image of the beast must be a representation of that same system. So America's role is to use false signs and wonders to trick people into constructing this unified church-state kingdom worldwide. The image of the beast is that new governmental system—the resurrected papal government replicated globally—not America as a nation. Your timeline is right, once the persecution starts we are in the final days—and yes it will be a spiritual mark not physical— yes obedience.
Popes stopped being military and government leaders centuries ago. They back up dictators behind the scenes. This pope is more focused on following the words of Jesus in the gospels. Perhaps a future pope will stray and become focused on political power, like those in the past. But his rising popularity is because he acts genuinely out of love for the world.

I have found that one huge clue is the changing of the calendar into Roman. What they removed was Holy. The Hebrew calendar kept all 3 spring feasts and all 3 fall feasts, on the same exact day of the week, year after year, decade after decade and millennia after millennia. What utter GALL. 364 days vs 365 days. One day. One day took Holy into obscenely rebellious.
